Anniversary stones
Anniversaries are traditionally commemorated by the giving of a stone symbolising every year of the marriage.
Anniversary stones should not be confused with birth stones.
Although gifts, especially valuable stones or jewels, had been traditionally given for anniversaries, it was only in 1922 that Emily Post published a list of suggested anniversary gifts in her book on etiquette. The list was expanded in reprints of the book and was broadened by other authors to include gifts for every year from the first to the twenty-fifth, plus every five years through the 75th wedding anniversary.
